Making Sense of....Assertiveness

What's it about?

Assertion involves accepting a number of basic human rights and using them in our daily lives helps us to develop confidence in ourselves. Being assertive means expressing ourselves simply and directly - it means we get away from bottling up our tensions and try to deal with them early on. Assertiveness also means accepting and respecting other people's rights as being as important as your own. It can help us grow in confidence so that we can tackle difficult situations without fear.

* What does it mean to be assertive?
* What is the opposite?
* What are the advantages and disadvantages?
* What are the main areas where people find it difficult to be assertive?
* Making requests - and saying No
* Giving and receiving criticism
* Giving and receiving compliments
* Look at body language

Learning Outcomes

* Recognise your own behaviour patterns
* Develop assertiveness skills
* Understand the importance of being assertive
* Develop good communication skills
* Build your confidence and self esteem
* Set achievable goals

N.B. This course is delivered in two separate sessions and can be tailored to the needs of the group (e.g. parents of teenagers).
