Why hold courses for parents at work?

Parents want the best for their children. They want to know how to communicate successfully with their children and support their education.

Many parents, however, find it difficult to access the support they need when they’re working.

Benefits for employers

Successful organisations are those that appreciate their staff and value the contribution they make.

They want to help employees manage the demands of their careers and family lives.

Our courses are an opportunity to offer employees access to information and advice on a whole range of issues relating to education and parenting.

• Staff are less anxious and distracted about what’s going on at home

• Staff are more focused and productive

• Sessions are held at a time and place convenient to you with minimal encroachment on work time

• Many of the skills and strategies that employees learn in our sessions are transferable to the work place

‘Very high impact for relatively low cost … and do reduce staff turnover.” Sunday Times, March 2008

Benefits for employees

We enable parents to learn how to support their children's learning, communicate more effectively, develop assertive discipline, and understand how to help their children keep safe.

Parents are then:

• less distracted and more confident;

• able to gain skills, strategies, information and advice to take home and share with other family members;

• reassured that many of them share the same concerns and struggles.

Why Making Sense can fit the bill

Our work has developed as a result of years of teaching and working with schools, parents and children.

We regularly revise and evaluate our courses in response to parents’ feedback, the latest research and education initiatives.

We take an informal, friendly approach in providing an opportunity for positive, structured discussion.
As working parents ourselves, we understand parents’ concerns. We’ve also faced the challenges!

Flexible approach

We provide a flexible approach, which any organisation can adapt for its own requirements:

• a course of one-hour sessions at lunchtime or after work;

• one-to-one parent coaching sessions.

All our sessions make sure individual questions, issues and concerns have been addressed.

We provide:

• a variety of practical activities and strategies to try at home;

• information leaflets, with details of issues covered in the sessions;

• follow-up email, phone advice, information, and/or support.
